Commencing Treatment with Medication:

The purpose of treatment with medication is to obtain substantial and measurable improvements in symptom management, if this is not achievable then the benefits of being on medication are not proven and medication needs to be stopped.

Carefully selected treatment regimes work well on ADHD symptoms and good discussion around starting treatment, is always provided and patients are closely monitored and offered a same day contact for any questions on side effects.

We set out the best way to take medication here:

Stimulant medications – are taken for highly impactful ADHD symptoms where time is of the essence, in school, education or working environment and is used to improve working conditions such as those driving for their job. It is tolerated well as a medication and should produce excellent results or should not be taken on a regular basis.

The best way to take extended-release stimulant medication is in the morning, with food. It is better to have a source of protein and there is no clinical evidence for this, however, users of the medication are less likely to experience afternoon nausea if they have had protein in both their breakfast and lunchtime meals.

Drink fluids or additional water, reduce excess caffeine and do not use energy drinks.

If you have a reduced appetite on your medication, plan and have smaller meals or good quality and more often.

Keep a diary of the symptoms you experience and benefits that you notice or are noticed by someone who knows you well.

In the first weeks of starting your medication take your blood pressure and pulse every day, send the ‘mean’ reading to your clinician on the WhatsApp contact you have been provided.

After this take your blood pressure and pulse every week and have them ready at your monthly review.

Make contact via the WhatsApp number (Provided during your initial assessment) for any symptom problems. If you experience side effects and especially palpitations, see a healthcare professional via NHS 111 or Urgent Care, stop you medication until the cause is known, contact your dedicated clinician via the WhatsApp number to keep them updated.

Post titration or post 3 month prescribing – review monthly prescription requests

A large part of ADHD treatment is managing your own medication, and we will prescribe for you. You will take your prescription to a locally sourced pharmacy of your choice and obtain your medication.

Please note, once medication is commenced it is your responsibility to keep track of your remaining available doses and to book a review appointment to fulfil your new prescription. At these appointments you will need a most recent blood pressure reading and a pulse, and you most up to date weight if you have been asked to provide this regularly. This may be because your weight is under strict monitoring.

Important Notice:

If you reach titration and have had shared care refused or chose to continue without shared care you will need to pay for your follow-up appointments at the clinical rate of not for profit £30 for half an hour. These appointments are for monthly reviews and repeat prescriptions – post titration.

We do not charge for the prescription or postage to you but as we are not a registered charity we need to charge for the clinical rate of 30-minute appointments.

Please book your appointments within good time to meet your prescription needs.

We also have a prescribing service with Signature Pharmacy in London, who will receive your prescription from us, send you a payment link by email and your medication can be delivered to your door.

Please note – we do not have a trade agreement with any pharmacies and the prices they charge for their services are not within our control and we do not receive any remuneration from your prescriptions. Please contact the pharmacy independently if you require a breakdown of your prescription costs from them.

ADHD Medication rules and regulations:

We adhere to a strict set of practice rules and regulations: if you do not book into a review appointment, we cannot be responsible for gaps in your treatment journey.

We use Royal Mail for our prescription deliveries, we no longer track prescriptions, and we cannot take responsibility for lost or late delivered prescriptions.

We have had situations in the past where batch sent prescriptions have not arrived and we are working on a solution to this. All prescriptions must be handwritten and posted in accordance with best practice guidelines, and we may only fulfil prescriptions when we have up to date blood pressure and pulse and weight readings. Please keep these up to date and bring them to your review appointment. Or submit them via the WhatsApp number – prior to your booked appointment.
